Description: This carte de visite shows an African American soldier welcoming a cross-dressing Davis and his hoopskirt to Hotel de Monroe—Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. Although the press reported Davis’ involvement with Lincoln’s assassination plot throughout 1865, he was never charged. Davis was indicted for treason but the case never went to trial. After spending two years at the military base under martial law, a group of influential Southerners and Northerners posted his $100,000 bail on May 13, 1867.
