Published from 1940 to 1948, PM was founded by Ralph Ingersoll as a new kind of newspaper that would always seek to tell the truth and would not accept advertising. Additionally, "over half of PM's space will be filled with pictures--because PM will use pictures not simply to illustrate stories, but to tell them." PM billed itself as an independent, liberal daily newspaper, supporting trade unions and fighting racial intolerance. Staff photographers included Margaret Bourke-White, Morris Engel, Helen Levitt, and Weegee.
